Day 01: Delhi - Manali
Arrive Bhuntar Airport near Kullu. Transfer to hotel in Manali,
an hour's drive away. Day at leisure. Overnight at hotel.
Day 02: Manali - Sarchu
Begin the spectacular three-day drive to Ladakh. This high altitude
road connects the densely fertile Kulu valley to the stark barren
region of Ladakh. The first day of the drive is the MANALI (6,
324 FT) to JISPA (10, 978 FT) - 146 KM-drive The road slowly winds
up to the Rohtang Pass (13, 047 FT / 3, 978 M), the first of the
high passes, then down into the Lahaul Valley. The landscape changes
dramatically and the greenery is replaced by barren hill sides.
You go along the Chandra river to its confluence with Bhaga where
they merge to form the Chenab, one of the biggest tributaries
of the Indus. Overnight at Sarchu.
Day 03: Sarchu-Leh
Start out for Leh early morning. After descending from Sarchu,
we climb up the Lachlung La (16, 615 ft), across the Zanskar range.
It is a lovely drive to Leh through picturesque scenarios. Overnight
at hotel in Leh.
Day 04: Leh
After breakfast explore some of Ladakh's ancient gompas. SHEY
PALACE was built in 1645 by Deldan Namgyal as a summer residence
for the kings of Ladakh. It is the oldest palace in Ladakh. THIKSE
GOMPA is the most picturesquely situated in Ladakh. Its buildings
are arranged at various levels, leading up to the private apartments
of the incarnate lamas. From here one has a magnificent view of
the valley. HEMIS GOMPA is one of the most important gompas in
Ladakh, the largest and also the wealthiest. It was built in 1620
by the king-architect Singe Namgyal, a great patron of Buddhism.
Overnight at hotel.
Day 05: On trek
Drive to Stok. Visit Royal Palace Museum. Start
trek. About 4-5 hours to the base of Stok pass.
Day 06: Trek
Base of Stok pass - Rumbak. About 5 hours. Gradual ascend to Stok
La (4900 m) which takes about 2 1/2 hours. Steep descent on the
other side. Rumbak is a big village with a monastery.
Day 07: Rumbak - Spituk: Trek
About 7 hours of easy walk. Few river crossings. Drive back to
Leh.Da
Da y 08: Leh- Khardung la- Leh
A day trip to Khardung La, the highest motorable pass in the world.
Drive back and overnigt.
Day 09: Leh-Delhi
Transfer to airport. Fly to Delhi.
